With Scholtz Sidelined Due To Injury, Junior Cup Rider Wyman Carries The Flag For Westby Racing On Sunday At Indy

Westby Racing’s Superbike rider Mathew Scholtz was unfortunately ruled out of Sunday’s two races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway due to the injuries he suffered in Saturday’s race, so Junior Cup rider Cody Wyman was the lone rider on track for the team.

Cody started Sunday’s Junior Cup race two from the third row on the grid and moved into the top five on the opening lap. Competing within the same group of riders that he usually has to contend with, he got shuffled down to 10th at the end of the second lap, but he regrouped and used his talent and racecraft to move up to sixth place near the halfway point of the 11-lap event. The battle was far from over, however, and Cody got shuffled down to ninth a couple of more times, but then, he moved back up to sixth again on the second-to-last lap. On the final lap, he held on tenaciously to his position, but ultimately crossed the finish line in seventh.

“I got a pretty good start and was in the top five on the first lap,” Cody said. “Then, I nearly got punted off the bike by another rider. Luckily, I saved it and had to fight back from outside the top ten. Unfortunately, like most of our Junior Cup races, the riders shuffle around and lose touch with the quicker bikes. All of my fastest segments were when I could lead and run my own line and pace. There was a big battle for the last spot in the top five, and I ended up getting caught up in the draft and finished seventh. I felt quicker than the group I was racing in, and I thought I had podium-worthy pace like yesterday. But, that’s racing, and it didn’t turn out our way today. I’m happy for my team that we were able to put the Yamaha on TV for most of the weekend.

“Now, onto my favorite track on the calendar. Also, I’m sending my best wishes to my buddy and teammate Mat Scholtz, who I hope has a quick recovery. He’s a killer on the Superbike, and it’s a bummer that he got injured on Saturday. On to Laguna.”

Next up for Westby Racing is the final round of the 2020 MotoAmerica Championship, which will take place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, on October 23 through 25.
