Davi Millsaps

Will 2010 be Davi Millsaps’ year? He certainly hopes so. And for good reason. Millsaps is just 22 years old, but he has a lifetime of SX and MX experience under his belt. In 2006 he burst on the national Supercross scene, winning the AMA Supercross East Lites championship aboard a Honda CRF250R. No sooner had the last gate of the SX season dropped than Millsaps jumped up to the 450 class, riding in the AMA Motocross championship on a CRF450R, where he shocked the veterans by taking third overall.

But then lady luck showed just how fickle she can be. In 2007 Millsaps broke his femur just before the start of the Supercross season, and he suffered another injury just as his leg was healing.

In 2008 Millsaps was back: healthy, ready and raring to win. And win he did, with two Supercross victories and eight podium finishes. Then, just into the outdoor nationals, Millsaps was injured again, this time with a separated shoulder.

Cut to last year: Millsaps had a good Supercross season, finishing eighth overall but standing on the podium four times. Then at Hangtown early in the Motocross season, Millsaps was once again injured, this time hurting his neck and taking him out for much of the season.

So for 2010, Millsaps is in a familiar situation. He’s had much of the off-season to get fit, and he’s healthy. He’s on a great bike with a great team. And he’s hungry to win. All he needs now is a little luck and a season without injuries.

“I think I’m going to be a lot stronger and a lot more mentally prepared in 2010. I know where I need to be. I know the pace I have to go. I know what I have to do—it’s just a matter of going out there and doing the hard work and getting the job done.”

Millsaps also thinks he has the best bike. “The CRF450R is an amazing machine. It’s so small that I feel like a giant on it, but it’s definitely the way to go. I really want to show everyone that I can run in everyone’s faces and stay up front. I want to battle out front, and the Honda is the right bike for me to do that on.

Right now we’ve got the bike running really well, and I’m looking forward to it. The 2010 bike is a lot better for me; they’ve changed a lot of parts to make it better handling, especially the suspension. It’s definitely the best.”

Millsaps knows that he needs to win in 2010. And he’s ready to do exactly that. Make sure you’re watching Number 18 when that starting gate drops.
